A hiring freeze went into effect at University of Memphis in an effort to meet a no-growth state budget and to avert future layoffs, president V. Lane Rawlins said. “We sent out a memo early this morning indicating we are in a hiring freeze on all positions,” Rawlins said. “The budget situation doesn’t look good,” he added. “We need $2 million to $3 million more than we have.” State-funded colleges and universities have been told not to expect employee pay raises or increased funding for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Although tuition fee increases are anticipated, the amount has not been decided.

The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department’s new foodmobile will go on the road June 1 to begin delivery of foods to mothers and youngsters in rural areas, an official said yesterday. M.W. Yates, director of administrative services for the health agency, said a counterpart food-by-prescription program has been underway in South Memphis for about a week. “There are probably only 15 to 20 families getting food under our program in South Memphis now,” said Mr. Yates. “Within the next 30 days, we’ll probably be reaching 500 to 600 families in South Memphis.”

Mansfield, Ohio – Movie tough-guy Humphrey Bogart, 45, was married to 20-year-old Lauren Betty “The Look” Bacall, also of Hollywood, in a three-minute ceremony on the sprawling farm of novelist Louis Bromfield near here Monday.
100 years ago — 1920
New York – John Crot, prominent movie producer, said here yesterday that attendance at movies has increased sharply since prohibition went into effect, noting that in many instances “people are looking for something to do.” Production of movies will soon be one of America’s major industries, he said.
125 years ago — 1895
Little Rock – A pitched battle occurred near here yesterday between a posse of revenue agents and a gang of moonshiners. The officers discovered a still going full blast in a mountain gorge and were trying to make a surprise raid when their presence was acknowledged by a hail of buckshot. At sunset two ‘shiners lay dead and the rest were in jail.
