Grammy winning singer/rapper Lizzo is showing front-line hospital workers in the fight against COVID-19 some love. On Monday, Lizzo treated over 100 Baptist Memorial Hospital-desoto employees, who were working in the Southaven facility's COVID unit, to a special catered lunch.

Lizzo – a native of Detroit, who's spent time in Houston and Minneapolis – has no direct connection to the hospital or the region, but the singer has apparently been brightening work days for hospital staff in various cities around the country. “One of her representatives called one of our nursing supervisors on Sunday to make the arrangements and to let the team know that Lizzo thanks them for all they're doing,” said Ayoka Pond, director of Public Relations at Baptist Memorial Health Care. After lunch from Southaven sandwich maker Potbelly was delivered to workers on Monday, they also received a personal video message from Lizzo.

“Thank you for everything you guys are doing to fight during the pandemic to make sure that we're healthy,” said Lizzo in the message. “You guys are really putting yourselves on the front lines, so the least I could do was give you guys some lunch. Hope you enjoy the food and it puts a smile on your face.”

Lizzo added that “We are all taking this very seriously and staying home and staying safe to help helpers like you.”

Lizzo, born Melissa Vivane Jefferson, has become one of music's brightest stars over the last few years, breaking through with her 2019 album “Cuz I Love You.” Its success would propel her to eight Grammy nominations and three wins this year.
