Comedian Bert Kreischer comes to Malco Summer Drive-in
In what would be the first live entertainment event at Malco’s outdoor cinema since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, comedian Bert Kreischer will bring his “Hot Summer Nights” tour to the Summer Quartet Drive-in on Aug. 12.
The inspiration for the 2002 film “National Lampoon’s Van Wilder,” which was based on a Rolling Stone article that named then-florida State undergrad Kreischer “the top partyer at the Number One Party School in the country,” Kreischer has developed a brand of comedy that “interweaves party-boy antics with humorous anecdotes about family and fatherhood,” according to his publicists.
Typically performing shirtless,
Kreischer during the past decade has starred in standup comedy specials for
Netflix, Showtime and Comedy Central.
The most recent of these, “Bert Kreischer: Hey Big Boy,” debuted on Netflix in
March. The show represents Memphis’ foray into a current nationwide trend that finds concerts and comedy events being booked at drive-ins, which in many markets are just about the only entertainment venues still open to the public, due to coronavirus concerns. Kreischer’s “Hot Summer Nights” tour, for example, is taking the comedian to drive-in theaters across the South, the Midwest and the Northeast.
Malco has been in talks with various music promoters about possible live music events for the Summer Drive-in, but none have been announced so far. However, the drive-in has screened one-night-only pre-recorded “live” concert events that were created for the drive-in market. A Garth Brooks concert was shown June 27, and a Blake Shelton/gwen Stefani/trace Adkins show is set for Saturday.
Kreischer’s Summer Drive-in show is set to begin at 8:30 p.m., with “doors,” so to speak, opening at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets can be purchased at the comic’s website, Bertbertbert.com. Tickets are sold on a “carload” basis, starting at $100 for a car with two passengers. Social-distancing and other Health Department guidelines will be observed.
