NEW YORK – In a move that stunned both Hollywood and Wall Street, Walt Disney Co. said Monday that it would buy Capital Cities/abc Inc. for $19 billion, a deal that would create a giant company whose reach extends to every corner of the entertainment world. The merger brings together two companies that each are accustomed to star billing. With its films and theme parks, Disney is one of the world’s best known companies. ABC has the nation’s top-rated television network and its most respected news operation.
50 Years Ago — 1970
The first prefabricated school in Memphis is being built on Emerald Road south of Fox Meadows School, the Memphis Board of Education announced yesterday. Although the cost — $665,088 — is about the same as that for a typical elementary school, the board will realize a savings of about eight months in the time it takes to assemble the school. “We hope it will take about 120 days,” said John Freeman, assistant superintendent in charge of business affairs for the board. “That would get it open sometime in October.” The new school will relieve overcrowding at Cromwell School and Fox Meadows School, which has eight portable classrooms.
75 Years Ago — 1945
Memphis has been named the Nation’s Quietest City, it was announced today by the National Noise Abatement Council. The announcement was whispered by George W. Handy of Buffalo, N.Y., president of the council. Memphis has won an award for cities of its population group for the past three years, but this was the first grand prize among all classes, and Memphis won it.
100 Years Ago — 1920
MARION, Ohio – Turning aside from the political issues that have been in the forefront of the campaign, Senator Harding took for the theme of his front porch speech today a plea for solidarity of purpose and mutual good understanding among all classes and geographical sections of the nation. The speech was delivered from the porch of the Harding residence to a delegation from Mansfield, in a neighboring county, which came up in marching order and serenaded the Republican candidate for president with four brass bands.
