‘Mystery in Memphis’ will look into Wright’s homicide

- Dima Amro

ABC’S “20/20” will air “Mystery in Memphis” Friday at 8 p.m. looking into the homicide of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright.

Wright, a Memphis native who played for the University of Memphis and the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA, was killed in 2010.

The 2-hour special will have “new details” and interviews from Wright’s mother Deborah Marion and Kelvin Cowans, a journalist who said he dated Sherra Wright, Lorenzen Wright’s exwife, who pleaded guilty in 2019 to charges related to her ex-husband’s death.

In July 2010, Lorenzen Wright went missing and was found days later near TPC Southwind. His case went cold for years until November 2017, when Memphis

police announced they found a firearm they believed was used in the killing in a lake in Walnut, Mississippi.

That December, Billy Turner, a church deacon and small business owner, and Sherra Wright were arrested on charges related to Lorenzen Wright’s murder.

Her 2019 guilty plea to facilitation to commit first-degree murder and facilitation to commit attempted first-degree murder ensured she avoided a potential life sentence.

With credit for time served in jail since her 2017 arrest, the judge said Sherra Wright now might become eligible for release in roughly seven more years, potentially sooner with good behavior.

Turner has since made a series of court appearances and his trial is currently scheduled to start Oct. 26.

ABC’S 20/20 can be seen locally on WATN-TV.
