Tigers’ Austin, Goodson earn ALL-AAC first team honors

Calvin Austin III’S first season as a starting wide receiver for Memphis was rewarded by a spot on the ALL-AAC first team.

Austin and defensive lineman O’bryan Goodson were the only Tigers who made the all-conference first team announced Tuesday. Safety Quindell Johnson earned second team honors while tight end Sean Dykes and defensive lineman Morris Joseph were honorable mention.

Austin is the fourth Memphis player to have an 1,000-yard season. In 10 games, the junior had 60 catches for 1,025 yards and shared the AAC lead with 10 touchdowns, He also set a school record with five consecutiv­e games of at least 100 receiving yards.

Austin is also ninth in the nation in receiving yards and tied for ninth with six plays of at least 40 yards from scrimmage.

Goodson, an ALL-AAC honorable mention last season, had eight tackles for loss, including four sacks, and two forced fumbles in his senior year. He also helped Memphis finish fourth in the AAC in rushing defense as the Tigers allowed 145.7 yards per game, their fewest total since 2014.

Goodson suffered a season-ending injury this month and announced that he will begin preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Johnson had a breakout season as the sophomore had a team-high 70 tackles and three intercepti­ons. He ended the regular season with an intercepti­on in each of the Tigers’ previous three games.

Dykes led all AAC tight ends with 581 receiving yards and was tied for third in the conference among all players with seven receiving touchdowns.

Joseph was second in the AAC with seven sacks and fifth with 10 1/2 tackles for loss. He also has a streak of six consecutiv­e AAC games with at least one sack.
