6 workouts to try during the busy holiday season

- Jean Chen Smith Special to Memphis Commercial Appeal | USA TODAY NETWORK – TENNESSEE Yoga

For many of us, the holidays can wreak havoc on our weight and wellness. Chances are likely you’re surrounded by high-calorie sweets and savory plates to wear down your resistance. h Here are some effective workouts to help keep the holiday weight off.

Consider doing yoga if you are overworked and overstressed. While it’s a low-impact exercise, it can help strengthen muscles while improving posture and flexibility. With its rich 5,000-year history rooted in ancient Indian philosophy, the practice is a connection of the mind with the body, using breathing techniques.

Gear tip: Invest in a good yoga mat like Yoga Zeal, which is made with a soft, suede-like top surface and natural rubber backing to prevent slipping during your practice.

Running

Running is the exercise most people turn to when they want to lose weight. Running is not only effective for cardiovascular health, but you can pretty much head right out your door since you don’t need any expensive equipment.

Running engages the entire body — legs, glutes, core and arms. Build intensity slowly and steadily as your body gets used to the movement by adding sprint work or hill runs. Either of these will get your heart rate up and speed up your metabolism.

Check in with your form by keeping your arms swinging straight forward and back instead of side to side and look straight ahead so that your chin is parallel to the ground. Staying in an upright position and not slouching or hunching is just as important as it is strengthening your back muscles and engaging the core.

Gear tip: For wintertime running, make sure to dress in layers. Start with a base layer like Maloja Clothing’s GONPAM Shirt for women and WANGONOM for men, which are great for those brisk morning runs.
