William “Bill” Cuningham Douglas

-

William (Bill) Cuningham Douglas passed away peacefully on March 9, 2021 at Allen Morgan Health and Rehabilitation Center in Memphis. He was 94.

Mr. Douglas was born on June 27, 1926 to John Pitman Douglas and Bell Cuningham Douglas in Arlington, Tennessee. He graduated from Southwestern at Memphis, now Rhodes College, and began his lifelong career in the insurance business. In 1950, he married the love of his life, Peggy Parsons, and built a great life together for 68 years. He rarely missed a Sunday at Second Presbyterian church, and greatly enjoyed Sandy Willson’s Amen Bible Study group in later years. He was an active member of Chickasaw Country Club and loved golf, as well as traveling.

Most of all, Mr. Douglas loved his family and friends. He could light up any gathering with his enthusiasm and great sense of humor, and made new friends wherever he went. Known as “Papa” or “Nandy” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was treasured by them all. He showered his family with love, care, and generosity, and will be sorely missed.

Mr. Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Peggy, his brother John P. Douglas Jr., and his sister Sandol Douglas Patteson. He is survived by his three children, Margaret (Charlie) Wheeler, Joan(bill) Chapin, and Billy (Suzanne) Douglas; sister-in-law Edna Earl Douglas, brotherin-law Jimmie Patteson, and eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at Arlington Cemetery on Friday, March 12 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Second Presbyterian Church or the Trezevant Foundation.
