Craft Axe Throwing opens in Downtown Memphis

- Memphis Music Beat

Axe throwing, as both competitive sport and leisure activity, has been growing in popularity over the past decade. Once the sole province of lumberjacks and woodsmen, it’s become a popular pastime for adults of every persuasion, with axe throwing facilities cropping up everywhere from Australia to Poland, and all across the United States.

On Feb. 26, Memphis saw the launch of Craft Axe Throwing, a new Downtown center dedicated to the sport. Here are five things to know before you go.

Where to go to throw

Located at 344 Floyd Alley – just off Madison Avenue – the Bluff City location of Craft Axe Throwing is the latest addition to the franchise, which has eight other locations in the South and Midwest. The Memphis location will be the third in Tennessee, following centers in Nashville and Knoxville.

“We have always had it as our mission to provide a safe and fun environment for our guests to enjoy with their friends and family,” said owner Jake Jensen. “Our location is a great place for people to unwind and enjoy time with the people they care about.”

How does it work

Craft Axe Throwing “will allow visitors to throw actual axes at dart-board like targets while scoring points.” It will also offer casual and competitive league experiences via its easy-to-use online reservation system. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Before each session an “Axepert” will review rules and safety measures and teach patrons how to throw axes. Coaches will monitor the throwing areas at all times and are available to offer tips and advice as needed.

Throwing for one hour is $20 per person, plus tax, for parties up to eight members. Pricing is subject to change for large groups and longer sessions.

Cash, Visa, Mastercard and American Express are all accepted. Military (active duty and veterans), police, fire and EMS personnel with valid ID can also receive a 10% discount.

Rules

Throwers are required to wear closed-toed shoes. Comfortable clothes are suggested, though patrons should avoid wearing loose/baggy clothing and accessories.

All ages are welcome to enter the facility, but you must be at least 10 years old to throw axes. Anyone 18 years of age and younger must also have a parent or guardian present. All participants under the age of 19 must also have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Amenities

In addition to the axe throwing, patrons can also enjoy a bar that will serve a selection of craft brews. Although there will be adult beverages available, outside alcohol is not permitted. There will also be a selection of HDTVS showing sports and axe throwing competitions and coverage.

Hours of operation

Regular hours for the location are 4-9 p.m. Monday-thursday, noon-11 p.m. Friday-saturday and 2-9 p.m. Sunday.
