A Memphis Must-try: Blackened Salmon at Soul Fish Cafe
Have you tried the Blackened Salmon at Soul Fish Cafe?
It’s a question I am often asked and is always followed up by the person posing the question with, “It’s one of my favorite things on the menu.”
“Why would I order salmon at one of the best catfish restaurants in town,” I thought to myself.
I had the same reaction when friends recommended the Shrimp Po-boy at Soul Fish. And that sandwich turned out to be one of my favorite versions in town.
Last Friday, I took the advice I had been given so often and gave it a try. I am glad I did.
As promised, it was an excellent piece of salmon - perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned with their signature blackening spice blend.
Soul Fish’s blackened catfish is a regular order of mine. I sometimes find it has a little bit of a kick, but for some reason, the salmon was not as spicy. I am thinking it’s because the salmon is a thicker piece of fish so less blackened seasoning to fish ratio.
Soul Fish Cafe owner Raymond Williams told me salmon has been on the menu almost since day one.
Like their blackened catfish, you have several different ordering options.
Order it as an entree that comes with one side and a piece of cornbread or over
one of their salads. I am a huge fan of Soul Fish’s sides, so I suggest ordering a second side to go with the dish. I normally get a vegetable plus a starch, like mac-n-cheese or sweet potato fries.
You have two options for your salad. Choose from either a classic Caesar or try the Southwest Salad that is topped with black beans, corn, cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole and chipotle ranch dressing. You won’t go wrong with either.
I have a tried-and-true tip for no matter how you order the blackened salmon or the blackened catfish. Ask for a side of Soul Fish’s homemade remoulade sauce. It is so good with the fish ... and also a yummy dip for their sweet potato fries and hushpuppies.
Soul Fish Cafe has four locations in Memphis. Restaurants are located in Midtown, East Memphis, Germantown and Wolfchase.
