MEMPHIS - Hazel Hughey Canon died peacefully in her sleep on April 5, 2021 in Memphis, Tennessee.

She was born on October 14, 1920 in Topeka, Kansas to Roy and Nell Hughey and moved at age 5 to Asheville, North Carolina, where she grew up and attended high school. After earning her nursing degree at Berea College in 1941, she studied Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill, later working for the Shelby County Health Department and running the South Memphis Clinic until her retirement.

She was pre-deceased by her husbands James Skeen and Phillip Mcneill and was married to Cham Canon until his death in 2015.

A long-time member of Evergreen Presbyteri­an Church, in recent years she became a member of Germantown Presbyteri­an Church.

Ms. Canon traveled extensivel­y with the Elder Hostel program and traveled to Mexico to assist Dr. John Freeman in cataract surgery. She loved to dance and was an active member of singing and dancing groups at Kirby Pines, where she lived until her death.

A kind and loving friend to many, she gave of herself without expecting anything in return.

Mrs. Canon is survived by her sons Michael Skeen and Stephen Skeen and her daughter Sandra Williamson, as well as her grandchild­ren Aric and Ariel Skeen, Ashley Long-hewgley, Jorma Skeen, Adriann Skeen, Meg Williamson, Shannon Williamson, and Laura Williamson, and her great grandchild­ren Janie Kathryn Skeen, Jack and Leo Postlethwa­it, and Sophie Williamson.
