Fall foliage in Memphis
Here are 5 best spots to see autumn colors just as good as New England
Warm days and cool nights are bringing fall colors to Memphis, although a little late.
The Memphis area saw adequate rainfall in the past couple of months, which means the foliage will look like an autumn escape, according to Memphis Botanic Gardens Director of Horticulture Rick Pudwell.
“A lot of people always think New England is the best place to see fall color but I think some of the color in Memphis is just as good as New England,” Pudwell said.
He expects peak fall foliage to be during the first week of November.
As climate change brings hotter summers and milder winters, autumn colors do not begin to show until late October or early November, said Pudwell, who moved to Memphis 35 years ago when hues of yellow, orange and red showed at the beginning of fall.
“The third week of October used to be the peak for fall color,” he said. “With global warming, it’s pushed back later, and later, and later but I would say it’s just barely started right now.”
