25 years ago — 1996

Just when you were settling in to enjoy the café at Davis-kidd Bookseller­s, soon there will be more eating to do in Laurelwood. Bob Hicks, a partner in the defunct restaurant Midtown, is planning to open a new restaurant and takeout shop called Cena in Laurelwood Shopping Center, in the site of the dear departed Garden Cafe. Pronounced KAY-NA, Cena is the Latin word for ”main meal of the day,” Hicks said. The restaurant will feature regional dishes from all over the country at moderate prices ($10 to $14 per entrée). The wine list will offer up to 100 selections, with about 70 wines available by the glass.

50 years ago — 1971

A two-alarm fire that began in a locked storage room on the ninth floor of Baptist Hospital at 7 last night forced the evacuation of about 110 patients on three floors, but officials reported no injuries. The first alarm was received at 7:25 p.m., and the fire was reported under control at 7:49 p.m. Hospital staff members moved patients on the sixth, seventh and eighth floors from the wing.

75 years ago — 1946

MCCOMB, Miss. – Constructi­on of the first experiment­al lightweigh­t allaluminu­m refrigerat­or car in the Illinois Central Railroad shops here was celebrated Tuesday with a day-long program participat­ed in by high company officials as well as local and state citizens.

100 years ago — 1921 There must be a lot of good fellows together somewhere in the world, for such fine days as this section now passing through must be in accordance with the old song, “It’s always fair weather when good fellows get together.” And the local weather bureau yesterday said it might be expected to continue indefinitely. The maximum temperatur­e yesterday was 75 degrees and the minimum 52.

125 years ago — 1896

The Grand Opera House was crowded to standing room last night, with some 2,500 Memphians gathered to hear Republican gubernator­ial candidate G. N. Tillman. He was interrupte­d frequently by applause as he attacked the record of his opponent, former-governor Bob Taylor.
