ACC ROUNDUP

-

No. 16 Wake Forest 70, Army 56: Sam Hartman threw for a career-high 458 yards and five touchdowns in a big-play display and ran for another score, and visiting Wake Forest (7-0) defeated Army (4-3) on Saturday to remain unbeaten.

Army, which lost its third straight, had not defeated a ranked opponent since a 17-14 victory over Air Force in 1972, but the Black Knights made Wake Forest (7-0) earn it.

Hartman was unstoppable and rarely pressured, completing 23 of 29 passes and hitting touchdown passes of 41, 54 and two of 75 yards as he matched the Michie Stadium record for scoring passes. Army never led, and a costly interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter gave the Demon Deacons the breathing room they needed.

Two touchdown passes by Army’s Jabari Laws, a 21-yarder to Isaiah Alston late in the third, and a 25yarder to Tyrell Robinson midway through the fourth, kept it a one-possession game until Hartman scored on an 8-yard run with 6:57 left

Army rushed for 416 yards and finished with 595 yards offensively as the teams combined for 1,233 yards in a game that featured just one punt.

It was a one-possession game until the third quarter after Army knotted the score at 28-all on Jakobi Buchanan’s 1-yard touchdown run.

Syracuse 41, Virginia Tech 36: Garrett Shrader rushed for three touchdowns and threw for two, including one to Damien Alford with 19 seconds left, to lift visiting Syracuse (4-4, 1-3 ACC) over Virginia Tech (3-4, 1-2).

The Orange scored 14 points in the final 2:28 to snap a three-game losing streak. Shrader’s 45-yard scoring toss to Alford, who beat Virginia Tech’s Dorian Strong, was the difference.

Syracuse cut a 36-27 deficit to 36-34 on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Shrader to Courtney Jackson with 2:28 remaining. The Orange’s defense then stopped the Hokies on the ensuing possession, leading to Shrader’s winning toss to Alford.

Shrader threw for 236 yards and rushed for 174, accounting for 410 of Syracuse’s 550 yards of total offense. Sean Tucker added 112 yards rushing and a score.

Florida State 59, Umass 3: Jordan Travis, Jashaun Corbin, Treshaun Ward, D.J. Williams and Lawrance Toafili each had touchdown runs as Florida State (3-4) routed visiting Umass (1-6).

The Seminoles have won three straight games for the first time since the end of the 2017 season.

Corbin ran for 127 yards on 11 carries. Florida State ran for a season-high 365 yards, the sixth time this season the Seminoles have surpassed the 200-yard mark on the ground.

Florida State scored on eight of its 10 drives and matched its season high in points for a game this season with 38 in the first half alone.
