Britain’s Princess Diana has fallen in love with a 36-year-old Muslim heart surgeon and wants him to become her second husband after heir to the throne Prince Charles, a British newspaper claimed Sunday. In a story splashed over most of its first five pages, the Sunday Mirror linked the divorced Princess’s name to Hasnat Khan, an unmarried British-based cardiac specialist whose family lives in Pakistan.

And it quoted a “friend” of the 36year-old Princess saying she hoped he would father a half-sister to her two sons, Princes William and Harry. “The Princess is desperatel­y in love,” the tabloid said in quoting the unnamed “friend” of Diana. “On the one hand, she wants the world to know. But on the other hand, she is understand­ably concerned that her enthusiasm may send him running.”

50 years ago — 1971

Late payment restrictio­ns on utility bills, including the 10 percent penalty, may be relaxed by the end of the year, a Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division said yesterday. However, Carl Crawford, LG&W public relations director, refused to confirm a report by City Councilman James L. Netters that the late charge definitely will be reduced.

Raymond Skinner, president of the Community Chest, yesterday expressed the hope that the $836,703 goal in the current drive would be exceeded by “$45,000 to $50,000 to help take care of the increased cost of food and fuel for the institutio­nal agencies.” Smaller divisions, such as city and county employees, the Shelby County educationa­l division and the office division have been “contributi­ng above the average,” he said.

100 years ago — 1921

NEW YORK – An increase of working hours from 44 to 49 a week in the garment industry, together with the establishm­ent of the piece work instead of the week work system, both effective Nov. 14, was announced today by the Clark, Suit and Skirt Manufactur­ers’ Protective Associatio­n. Nearly

60,000 workers are affected.

At 5 this morning, Associated Press telegrams received by The Commercial Appeal leave no doubt that William Mckinley

has been elected President of the United States and Garret A. Hobart Vice President. In Tennessee, there is some doubt that R. L. (Bob) Taylor has been elected governor.
