Thankful that Memphis is

- By Cassandra Bell-warren, President, Memphis Area Associations of REALTORS®

Thanksgiving is a great time to enjoy family and friends. Food, too – turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, some mac & cheese, and homemade pies.

It’s the beginning of the holiday season, too. Maybe you’re excited about the gifts you will pick out for your children or significant other. If that’s the case, we’re more than lucky. We should be counting our blessings.

But you know what else? As Memphians, we really do have a pretty good life here. Sure, I recognize it’s not perfect. No place is perfect.

That said, with each passing year I’m more thankful I get to call Memphis home.

Ours is not a cookie-cutter city that could be confused with many others. We’re real. We have legit heart and soul. That’s not true everywhere.

We’re workers, too. Blue-collar even when we’re white-collar. In Memphis, we address our issues. We try to solve them. We try to make our city a better place, day by day.

Best of all, we’re a city of helpers. Every metric that measures a city’s generosity always seems to land Memphis in the Top 3 nationally. We’re givers and I’m proud of that because neither is that true everywhere.

So we should take time during the holidays to appreciate all of this. And yes, I realize work is what keeps the whole American enterprise going. It’s what keeps this city going.

From a real estate standpoint, this has been a strong year. Even with the change of seasons, the market remains active with opportunities for both buyers and sellers throughout Greater Memphis.

More of my colleagues have been able to help more people make their home ownership dreams come true. Some of those people are first-time homeowners. It’s a big moment in their lives. An unforgettable moment.

Meanwhile, Memphis continues to make progress. Ford, for one huge example, is making a $5.6 billion investment at the Memphis Regional Megasite, where all-electric trucks will be built.

Increasingly, we are becoming a destination for business and for anyone seeking a vibrant lifestyle where a family home is still extremely affordable.

So, I’ll just say it straight out: Memphis is a cool place. We’re very lucky to live here. In fact, I count it as a major blessing.

Here’s hoping you and yours enjoy the holiday season and all your blessings – including that second piece of pie when you think no one’s looking.
