Taconganas has two new locations in the works

Taconganas has two new locations coming to the Memphis area.

The popular taco food truck opened a fourth permanent food truck location in Memphis on Friday. The newest truck is located in Midtown at 2120 Central Ave., at the corner of Central and Cooper.

The Central Avenue location has parking for 19 cars, and the lot can be entered from both Central and Cooper.

“We are excited about the location,” Taconganas owner Greg Diaz said. “Right now, we will be open the same hours as our other locations, but people are already asking if we will stay open later on the weekends here in Midtown.”

The company also has its first brickand-mortar location in the works.

Taconganas will be taking over the restaurant space in Thornwood currently occupied by Kohesian.

“I have worked with Greg on all his truck locations and believe he has a fantastic vision for a new concept at Thornwood. We could not be more excited,” said Spence Ray, vice president at Mcneill Commercial Real Estate.

Diaz opened the first Taconganas in early 2020. Since then, his taco trucks have had a cult-like following from hungry Memphians. The taco truck is known for its signature tacos “Nganas Style” that come with your choice of meat, in a corn tortilla dipped in an oil prepared with dried peppers.

“When I was growing up, my mother and grandmother made a recipe with oil and chiles and would dip the tacos in it before throwing it on the grill,” Diaz said. “It gives the taco extra flavor.”

The new Germantown location will be a higher-end Mexican restaurant.

“I have hired some great chefs, and we have a GM coming in from Seattle,” said Diaz, adding the new restaurant will have a full bar.

Kohesian Soko Style Eatery (1730 S Germantown Road, #115, Germantown) is still open for business. Owner Julie Kim said its last day of operation will be Dec. 10.

“It was not an easy choice to end this chapter,” said Kim, whose restaurant celebrates its two-year anniversary this month. “We are doing well, but we were up against a lot of things out of my hands. My husband and I will be focusing on our other family businesses.”

The new “yet to be named” concept by Taconganas in Thornwood will open in early 2022. “I am shooting for the first week in February,” Diaz said.
