By now, they have scrutinized hundreds of old quilts. Some of the members of the Mississippi Quilt Association have made more than a hundred themselves, a goodly number of which have been winners of important quilting competitions. But still their excitement is palpable when an old quilt is hoisted on a frame for photographing. “It’s a broderie perse!” says Nancy Welsch, who leaves her post in the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church here to get a closer look, her camera in her hand. She knows immediately the quilt had to be old — almost 200 years old, because the broderie perse or Persian embroidery technique was popular around 1800. The organization, which has about 350 members, is in the final phase of a twoyear project to document quilts made in or brought to Mississippi before 1945. The information it collects will be compiled in an archive, adding to the body of information available on quilting in the state. In the future, the organization plans to exhibit some of the outstanding quilts documented through its searches.

The Memphis Democrat said Dunn had used poor judgment and acted with a lack of discretion but added, “I don’t think he committed a crime.”
