Memphis area baseball players to watch
The spring season has officially taken center stage. As Week 3 begins, here are the Commercial Appeal's 20 baseball players to watch this season:
Grey Arnett, Harding Academy, OF/P, Sr.: Arnett had a batting average of .394 as a junior with 11 stolen bases and 22 runs scored. On the bump, he had a 2.23 ERA with 27 strikeouts.
Hudson Brown, Northpoint, 1B/P, Jr.: Brown, a Kentucky commit, had a .404 batting average with nine home runs, six doubles and seven triples as a sophomore.
Thomas Crabtree, Collierville, P, Jr.: Crabtree had a 6-1 record on the mound last season with a 1.92 ERA and 42 strikeouts.
Matthew Dallas, Briarcrest, P, Jr.: Dallas, a left-handed pitcher, is committed to Tennessee.
Carson Fair, Southaven, INF/P, Jr.: Fair started this season batting .500 with seven RBIS and four doubles in nine games. On the mound, he has pitched 152⁄3 innings with a 2.23 ERA and 22 strikeouts.
Owen Geiger, Munford, P, Jr.: Geiger missed the 2021 season with an injury, but he still has interest Missouri, Tulane, Charleston Southern and Memphis.
Jack Hibbard, Arlington, SS/P, So: Hibbard batted .306 as a freshman for the Tigers last season.
Tyler Kamler, FACS, OF, Sr.: Kamler led the team as a junior with a .380 average and 26 RBIS.
Connor Mccaslin, Arlington, P, Sr.: Mccaslin returns for his season after recording 49 strikeouts as a junior.
Jack Newman, Briarcrest, P, Sr.: Newman, who has signed with University of Alabama Huntsville, was 4-1 with a 0.51 ERA and 44 strikeouts as a junior.
Eli Ramsey, Tipton-rosemark, OF, Jr.: Ramsey, a Middle Tennessee State commit, had a .346 batting average and 11 doubles as a sophomore for the Rebels last season.
Grayson Saunier, Collierville, OF/P, Sr.: Saunier, a right-handed pitcher, is committed to Ole Miss.
Mason Shropshire, ECS, OF, Sr.: Shropshire, a Northwest Mississippi CC signee, batted .349 last season with 17 RBIS and seven doubles last season for the Eagles.
Gavin Sims, Jr., Whitehaven, SS, Sr.: Sims led the area with a .538 batting average last season with 32 RBIS in his junior season. He's signed to Dyersburg State CC.
James Smith, Northpoint, SS/P, Sr.: Smith, an Ole Miss signee, batted .434 last season with eight home runs. As a pitcher, he recorded 103 strikeouts in 54 innings pitched.
Jason Smith, Southaven, 2B/SS, So.: Smith has been on fire for Southaven this season, batting .556 with eight RBIS, three doubles, two triples
and eight stolen bases in the first nine games for the Chargers.
Sam Thomas, FACS, OF/P, Jr.: Thomas had a .330 average with 24 stole bases and 36 runs scored as a sophomore for the Crusaders.
Holden Warmath, Covington, INF/P, Jr.: Warmath batted .340 with 25 RBIS and 10 doubles as a sophomore. On the mound, he was 6-2 with 71 strikeouts and a 2.4 ERA.
Thomas Williams, Fayette Academy, 1B, Sr.: Williams batted .391 as a junior with 10 doubles and 30 RBIS.
CJ Willis, Bartlett, 1B, Sr.: Willis, who has signed to Memphis, batted .305 last season with three home runs and 23 RBIS in his junior season.
