- Katherine Burgess

Shelby County Commissioner Brandon Morrison is being challenged in her Republican primary by newcomer Jordan Carpenter.

Morrison, who currently represents the East Memphis District 13, has now been drawn into the newly created District 4, which includes parts of East Memphis and Germantown.

The winner of the Republican primary is expected to face Democrat Britney Chauncey in the general election. Chauncey is unopposed in her primary.

The county primary is May 3, with early voting from April 13 through April 28. The general election is Aug. 4.

Jordan Carpenter is executive vice president and general counsel at Artisent

Floors. He previously served four years on active duty as an Army Airborne Psychological Operations Specialist, completing combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. He is endorsed by Republican county commissioners Mark Billingsley, Amber Mills, David Bradford and Mick Wright and the Shelby County Deputy Sheriff ’s Association.

“I am running for an office in Shelby County Government because I think that our county can be the best place to start a business, raise a family and build community,” Carpenter said. “However, I don’t think we’re headed in that direction right now so I decided to get involved so I can make that happen for my family and for my neighbors. Specifically, I decided to get into this race and challenge Commissioner Morrison because I don’t think she represents the values of voters in District 4.”

Incumbent Brandon Morrison is family office president of MBA Corporation, dealing with family investments. She has been on the Shelby County Commission representing East Memphis since 2018, advocating workforce development, transit and healthcare. She is endorsed by Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich, State Rep. John Gillespie, State Rep. Tom Leatherwood, State Rep. Kevin Vaughan and State Rep. Mark White.

“My primary interests right now are transit, workforce development, literacy and cleaning up the community,” Morrison said. “We continue to need to work on the regional transit, innovative 21st century transit initiatives. That’s one of the top priorities. Early childhood literacy is a second priority related to education and supporting all of our economic development initiatives through whatever the workforce needs that they have.”
