Frost Bake Shop opens in The Lake District

Things just got a little sweeter in Lakeland. Frost Bake Shop opened a third location in The Lake District development on Monday.

The new bakery is at 9845 Lake District Drive North in Suite 113. It's one of the first businesses to open in the development.

Kristi Kloos, who owns Frost Bake Shop with her husband, Bill, said the new bakery will carry its full line of cakes, cupcakes, cookies and bars.

That's 17 flavors of cupcakes (18 when it's pumpkin spice season), 12 varieties of 9-inch cakes, nine flavors of 6-inch rosette cakes, five flavors of brownies and bars, as well as its line of famous gooey cookies.

“We also have five mini pies and five mini cheesecakes in the case,” Kloos said.

The bakery, which is open seven days a week, makes everything from scratch. Cakes are frozen to ensure they remain fresh and perfectly decorated for transport.

Frost's signature frosting is one of the key components that has made this Memphis bakery so popular.

“Our frosting is a butter and cream cheese base. It's the perfect mixture of the two. The combination has a nice finish — unlike when you make a traditional buttercream with shortening,” said

Kloos, adding the base recipes originated from the Kloos family.

The new bake shop

At 3,200 square feet, the new location is closer in size to the Collierville bakery than the smaller East Memphis location in Laurelwood.

“The Lakeland bakery will have a wedding and events space like we do in Collierville,” said Kloos, adding wedding consultations will be held at both the Lakeland and Collierville locations.

The Lakeland bakery also has space for birthday parties and special gatherings.

Casual café seating is available for those wishing to enjoy their treats at the shop, plus free Wi-fi.

The recipe for expansion

The opening of the third location happened in conjunction with the expansion of the bakery's production facility in Bartlett this past year.

Kloos said they knew they would need more production space to keep up with the demand of having three bakeries open seven days a week.

“We now have over 10,000 square feet,” Kloos said. “We started out with one bay, and now we have four bays.”

One bay is dedicated to mixing and baking, while another is for cake

decorating and custom orders. The third and fourth bays are dedicated to finishing, packaging and storing the cakes. “Two-thirds of the fourth bay is a massive walk-in freezer,” Kloos said.

Frost offers baking and decorating classes at the Bartlett production facility throughout the year. The schedule is posted on frostbakeshop.com. A class also offers a unique chance to see the behind-the-scenes operations of this family-run business. “It’s the only time we give tours to the public,” Kloos said.

Kloos, who said she and her husband moved to Lakeland in 2020 just before the pandemic, said one of the reasons for the new location was to offer something closer to the production facility in Bartlett. “Customers near the bakery were always asking us for a closer pickup location,” she said. “So when we heard about the new Lake District, we thought it would be the perfect spot.”

Bill Kloos said he is anticipating a positive response to this addition. “Our amazing team has worked hard to make

this possible, and we look forward to offering our made-from-scratch desserts, and great service, to Lakeland and the surrounding areas,” he said.
