25 years ago — 1998 Proponents of a new ice rink say putting the facility in east Shelby County, preferably Germantown, makes sense because of community interest in ice skating and hockey. But finding 10 acres that fit zoning needs, cost and other considerat­ions appears to be the first major obstacle. The interest in skating coincides with growth that has made east Shelby County land expensive, particular­ly for a commercial­ly zoned site.

50 years ago — 1973 Assignment: Memphis – Sooner or later somebody has got to do something about the situations in television’s situation comedies. The bitter truth is that so many of them have become elderly and infirm that their continued exploitati­on has become a national disgrace.

75 years ago — 1948 KNOXVILLE – Local, state and Federal officials agreed Thursday to a two-point plan for the constructi­on here of a $7,000,000 medical and research center and hospital to experiment with radioactiv­e isotopes.

100 years ago — 1923

ST. LOUIS – The condition of Bishop Daniel S. Tuttle, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church in America, took a turn for the better today, according to attending physicians. It was reported tonight that the aged prelate, who has been critically ill with grippe for more than a week at his residence here, had regained consciousn­ess, emerging from the state of coma into which he sank yesterday.

125 years ago — 1898

The Rev. W.T. Hudson, who resigned the pastorate of the Johnson Avenue Baptist Church to become superinten­dent for West Tennessee of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society, with his office at present at 10 Leath Street, has returned from a successful visit to Jackson and Nashville.
