The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a Collierville police officer shot and killed a man during a Sunday night traffic stop, the state agency said in a statement.

According to TBI, officers with the Collierville Police Department stopped 30-year-old Antwon Booker at the corner of Poplar Avenue and Schilling Boulevard around 10:30 p.m. for speeding.

"During the stop, a physical altercation ensued between an officer and the driver," TBI said. "Reports from the scene indicate that during the altercation, the driver, identified as Antwon Booker, grabbed for the gun of one of the officers. The other Collierville officer fired his service weapon, striking Booker, who was pronounced deceased at a local hospital."

Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy called TBI in to conduct the investigation. Mulroy's office has, in the past, released footage in certain fatal police shootings, an effort he says brings more transparency to those investigations.

The Shelby County District Attorney's Office did not immediately respond to questions asking if it would release footage in this case.

The Shelby County criminal justice portal showed a Booker had been cited for speeding and reckless driving three times, along with having felony and misdemeanor cases in 2018 and 2023 dismissed. He was given diversion in 2018 for a misdemeanor assault charge.

CPD Major David Townsend said Monday afternoon the two officers had been placed on "paid administrative leave."

A public records request was made Monday for body camera and in-car camera footage but was not filled at the time of publication.
