MEMPHIS - Helen Shafer Hogan was born July 12, 1932, in Philadelph­ia, PA, to Raymond and Alleen Shafer. She passed away on March 1, 2024.

The Shafer family settled in Memphis. Helen attended Immaculate Conception Grade School, graduated from Sacred Heart High School, and attended Memphis State University. Helen married the love of her life, Johnny Hogan, on August 8, 1953. They enjoyed 44 wonderful years together until his passing in 1997.

Helen was a devoted wife and mother and a founding member of the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit, where she was active as a volunteer for several years. She especially enjoyed working with the Bereavemen­t Ministry. Helen was an avid bowler and played on various teams for many years. Her love of books led her to volunteer at the Main Library creating audio tapes for the blind as well as volunteeri­ng at the Holy Rosary School Library. Her passion for watching classic movies and Jeopardy made her an invaluable member of several trivia teams. She enjoyed her own pets and everyone else’s.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her 4 siblings, and her loving husband, Johnny Hogan. She is survived by her 3 children, Dick Hogan (Sue) in Somerdale, NJ, Pat Hogan (Jackie) in Memphis, and Judy Bivens (Lynn) in Cumberland, ME, as well as 3 grandchild­ren, Ben Hogan, Billy Kennedy and Barbara Kennedy Yoder. She is also survived by 3 great grandchild­ren, John Isaac and Jane Hogan (Ben), and Shawn Kennedy (Barbara) and countless nieces and nephews who adored her.

Services will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024, at the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit, 2300 Hickory Crest Dr., Memphis, TN 38119. Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM, Mass will be held at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception. A short graveside service will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery for those who would like to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit, the American Heart Associatio­n, the American Cancer Society, or the charity of your choice.
