Roger Jones Cunningham was born June 2, 1936 to Melvin and Laura Cunningham in Webster City, Iowa.

He did his undergradu­ate studies at Drake University and obtained his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Iowa. He served as captain in the Air Force Medical Corps in Warner Robbins AFB, Georgia and then came back to Iowa City for his Cardiology Residency.

Roger practiced Cardiology at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis from 1971 until his retirement in 2006. In his more than 35 years he was innovative leader in the medical community and helped many patients. He served on the committee which integrated computers into Baptist.

Passionate about the outdoors, Roger’s hobbies included camping, backpackin­g in Colorado, scuba diving and building bird houses. His work on his hobby farm earned him “Cooperator of the year” by the Tate County Mississipp­i Soil and Water conservati­on District. He also enthusiast­ically followed The University of Memphis basketball and traveled with the Rebounders to many games. Roger was known for his love of people. He sought out experts in every field and enjoyed gleaning knowledge from them.

Roger leaves his brother: Dennis Cunningham, Laguna Beach, CA; 3 children: Brian Cunningham (Lynne Opperman), Garland, Tx; Susan Metz (Tim Metz), Sioux Falls, SD; and Janet Rau (Ken Rau), Smyrna, GA; 5 grandchild­ren: Ethan Metz, Sarah Geritz (Jacob Geritz), Dorothy Rau, Griffin Metz (Jaclyn Hallaway) and Alex Rau.

He is also remembered fondly by his former wives Karen Hohman and Sheila Jordan, with whom he remained life-long friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Benjamin Rau.

His favorite quote was, “Nothing matters more in this world or the next than how you treat your fellow man (woman).” Well done, Dad.
