E. Paul Getaz, MD, PHD, MFA, MBA, FRCP (London), FRCP (Edinburgh), FRCP (Canada), FACP, an esteemed Hematologist-oncologist with a diverse educational background, passed away at the age of 79 in Johnson City, TN, on March 20, 2024. Born on August 13, 1944, in Cape Town, South Africa, Dr. Getaz was a product of his mother’s commitment to education, which allowed him to pursue his academic and professional passions.

His early education at Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town laid the groundwork for his values of respect, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for learning. This foundation served him well as he entered the University of Cape Town Medical School during an era of significant medical advancements. His training included some unique opportunities to learn from medical greats such as Chris Barnard and Velva Schrire and witnessing the first heart transplant. He was granted a position at St. Thomas’s Hospital in London to complete his fellowship where he had the opportunity to work with Dame Cicely Saunders, the founder of Hospice.

In the 1970s Getaz immigrated to the United States to complete his Hematology-oncology specialty training at Roswell Park in Buffalo, NY.

Dr. Getaz’s career was marked by his dedication to mentorship and research. He nurtured future healthcare professionals at Tufts New England and the University of Tennessee, where he shared his knowledge as an Associate Professor of Pharmacoeconomics. His research contributions were significant, reflecting his commitment to medical innovation. He founded a private hematology-oncology clinic in Memphis, Tennessee, and served patients there from 1980 to 1993.

In 1993, Getaz’s role changed from physician to patient when he received a significant cancer diagnosis making it impossible to continue work in his specialty. After years of investing in his clinical practice, he found it was necessary to change his role. He chose to continue his education pursuing an MBA and PHD in Health Science Administration. This prepared him to serve in a leadership role supporting medical staff, administration, and patient needs. His experiences as a cancer patient survivor enabled him to relate to patients in a very personal way providing empathy and hope.

He had a life-long love of art and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in photography which he pursued with his ever-present curiosity. He found solace in nature, often fly fishing, and was a lifelong dog enthusiast. Above all, his family was his greatest source of joy. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Brenda and 5 children; Natalie Hollembaek, Nicholas Getaz, S. Elizabeth Flaherty (Getaz), Leslie Schaffer, and Christopher Getaz; grandchildren Molly Flaherty, Arthur Getaz and Oliver Getaz as well as a legacy of compassion, resilience, and dedication to both the arts and sciences.

With heartfelt gratitude for the kindness and sympathy extended by all, the family of Dr. E. Paul Getaz wishes to share that the memorial services will be private, as they remember and celebrate his life.
