Convicted child-killer Robert Glen Coe is closer to execution than any other death row prisoner has been since 1960, when Tennessee last put someone to death. Close behind are Phillip R. Workman, 45, and Gary Bradford Cone, 50, both of whom also are nearing the end of some 20 years worth of appeals. "We've never gone this far before," said Asst. State Atty. Gen. Glenn Pruden of Nashville, who represents the state in death penalty appeals.

Dr. Walter L. Walker, 39-year-old vice president for planning at the University of Chicago, will be the new president of Lemoyne-owen College. He will assume the presidency of the college July 1.

Highlighted by a stirring parade and the presence of a famed Army general, Memphis will celebrate Army Day tomorrow, commemorating the entry of the United States into World War I on April 6, 1917. The general is Maj. Gen. William H. Arnold, who commanded the Americal Division in fighting in the
Pacific during World War II.
100 years ago — 1924
Memphis will have the automatic, dial system of telephone service in operation during the summer of 1925 if no unforeseen delays occur, according to an announcement made late yesterday afternoon by Frank Flournoy, district manager of the Cumberland Telephone Company. The new plan, when fully in operation, will mean that the subscriber will ring his own number through the agency of a dial on his telephone without the soft voice of the "hello girl" at the central office.
