Montco Amateur champ crowned
Souderton junior wins second title of the weekend with win in Montco Amateur
WHITPAIN » After shooting a historically low 65 in the first round of the Montgomery County Amateur Championship, Dawson Anders entered Sunday’s final round with a three- stroke lead.
“His first round yesterday, his 65, was an all time record for the County Am,” the event executive director Tony Leodora said. “Nobody ever shot a 65. It was also his lowest score.”
Anders would need every one of those strokes as he held off Dan Furman of Commonwealth National by one stroke to win the 15 th County Am at Meadowlands Country Club.
“It was reassuring that I had a little bit of room to work with,” Anders said. “I didn’t want to give up anything easy, which I actually found myself doing. Around the middle of the round I was treating it too much like match play.”
After winning the Montgomery Country Junior championship on Friday at Plymouth County Club in a playoff, it was a good weekend for Anders.
“I’m surprised and grateful I managed to pull it off, I didn’t make it easy on myself but I’m glad I could pull it out barely,” Anders said. “
The Sunday final was a brutal marathon as the final group in the final round duked it out through 18 holes that took nearly five hours to complete with heat indexes in the triple digits.
“I just treat it like match play,” the Souderton soontobe senior said. “We had some lost balls that took a while to find and it really dragged it out which didn’t really help any of us.”
The foursome in the final grouping showcased why they were the top dogs heading into Sunday’s final.
All four golfers were separated by three strokes with the highest score, Michael Carr of Philadelphia Cricket Club, checking in with a two-day total of 145.
Not only did the foursome prove its quality this weekend but also featured two previous County Am champions. Carr was the 2010 champ while Furman came in as the defending champion
Other notable finishes included Quinn Guzman of Souderton, who finished 10th with a score of 153 for the weekend while North Penn standout Ron Robinson formidably finished in the top 15. In the women’s division Mount St. Joseph’s Isabella DiLisio dominated the fiel, winning by 14 strokes posting a final score of 141.
