Head-on crash with school bus
Several injured after car veers into path of bus carrying students
UPPER POTTSGROVE >> Several people were injured Nov. 30 following a head-on collision between a blue sedan and a Pottsgrove School District school bus, police said.
Upper Pottsgrove police Chief Francis Wheatley said the accident took place at approximately 3 p.m. on Farmington Avenue near Gross Road. While the crash is still under investigation, the preliminary investigation suggests a blue Ford Focus crossed the yellow dividing line of the twoway street facing the oncoming school bus.
While the bus driver honked the horn and tried to veer right to avoid a crash, the sedan never changed direction and hit the bus head on, the chief said.
The two adults inside the sedan were both injured. The female passenger was partially entrapped and needed rescuers to remove her. The male driver also sustained injuries, though it’s unclear to what degree. The child in the back seat was uninjured and removed from the car by a bystander who arrived at the scene.
All three were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Trauma Center, Wheatley said.
The three students from Pottsgrove High School who were returning home on the bus were not injured. The bus driver suffered minor injuries. A Pottsgrove High School principal arrived on location and took custody of students. Parents arrived afterward to claim them.
Traffic along Farmington Avenue was closed for an hour.
Upper Pottsgrove Fire Company, West End Fire Company, fire police and Goodwill Ambulance assisted at the scene.
