Mayza back healthy and helping Hartford
If there were any doubts about the condition of Deanna Mayza’s shoulder they ended when the Hartford senior had back-toback standout games in a victory over Sacred Heart and a loss to Niagara.
Mayza, from Pennsburg (Upper Perkiomen, The Hill School), scored 24 points, including 20 in the second half, to lead the Hawks to an 81-64 triumph over Sacred Heart on Dec. 4. And, on Dec. 7, she had 22 points in a 75-62 loss to Niagara.
The 5-foot-7 guard was named to the America East All-Rookie team as a freshman and was an All-League third team choice as a sophomore. Last season, she was leading the team in scoring and assists when she injured her shoulder and missed 11 games.
“Deanna has rebounded from the injury and is completely healthy for her final season in a Hartford uniform and that’s great to see,” coach Kim McNeill said. “She’s having a great senior season and she brings so much to our team with her ability to score and create for others.”
Mayza leads the 7-4 Hawks in scoring (15.7) and assists (56). She’s hit 59-of139 shots from the field (42 percent) and has connected on 27-of-57 3-point attempts (47 percent). And she had eight assists in a 65-56 victory over Boston College to open the season on Nov. 11 and has had seven assists in two other games.
“Our team is off to a great start and Deanna has a lot to do with that,” McNeill said.
KEVIN BASCH (POTTSGROVE)
» The freshman helped the Delaware men’s swim team capture the Franklin & Marshall Invitational Nov. 18-20 in Lancaster, the Blue Hens totaling 1,629 points. Basch set a meet record when he captured the 1650 freestyle in 15:47.73. He was also a member of the winning 800 free relay with a time of 6:53.65 and he contributed points by finishing second in the 500 freestyle in 4:38.54 and ninth in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.41. SAMMY STIPA (SPRINGFORD) » The 5-foot-5 junior guard is second on the Lafayette women’s basketball team in scoring with a 7.4 average, the Leopards just 1-10 in their first 11 games and averaging just 47.7 points a game. Stipa is also averaging 2.7 rebounds
and leads the team in assists (30) and steals (22). She had 13 points in a 6752 loss to Duquesne on Dec. 11 to match her season high total which came in a 6251 loss to Robert Morris on Nov. 16. BRYANT QUILL (POTTSTOWN) » The 6-foot-4 sophomore forward is averaging 21.1 minutes off action off the bench for the Chestnut Hill men’s basketball team. He’s averaging 9.6 points and 3.1 rebounds with 11 steals and eight assists. Quill had a college career high 20 points in a 9374 loss to Franklin Pierce to open the season on Nov. 12. He had a team-high 14 points in a 90-51 setback to Philadelphia on Dec. 10. He played in 10 games off the bench as a freshman.
JILL BERTINO (BOYERTOWN)
» The junior opened the indoor track season with an outstanding effort for the Shippensburg women’s team in Bucknell’s Bison Opener Dec. 2-3 in Lewisburg. She tied for second out of 25 runners in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.92 and finished seventh out of 27 runners in the 200 meter dash with a PSAC qualifying time of 26.45. Bertino also ran the third leg on the 4x400 relay which finished second to Division I Bucknell with a time of 4:02.19. MIKKI GUITON (PERKIOMEN
VALLEY) » The 6-foot-1 junior center has played in all eight games and started seven for the Manhattan women’s basketball team. She’s averaging 5.9 points and 3.8 rebounds with four blocked shots. She scored a career-high 12 points with seven rebounds in a season-opening 60-56 victory over Holy Cross on Nov. 11. She matched those numbers in a 58-57 victory over Brown on Nov. 22. The Jaspers are 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. COURTNEY HINNANT
(SPRING-FORD) » The 5-foot10 senior forward has had two double-doubles in her first nine games with the Millersville women’s basketball team and the Marauders came out on the short end in both PSAC East contests. Hinnant had 14 points and 14 rebounds in a 60-49 loss to Mercyhurst on Nov. 20 and 15 points and 12 rebounds in an 8660 setback to California on Dec. 4. She’s averaging 9.4 points and leads the team in rebounding with a 7.8 average. Millersville is 3-6 overall and 1-4 in league play. MOLLIE JOHNSON (PHOENIXVILLE) » The sophomore defender scored her first collegiate goal for the Neumann women’s hockey team in a 3-2 non-league victory over Plymouth State on Dec. 2. It was the second goal in the game for the Knights who are 4-7-0 overall and 2-4-0 in ECAC West play. Johnson has also picked up an assist in a 2-1 loss to Stephenson on Oct. 19. She’s played in all 11 games this season with some starts after seeing action in just two games off the bench as a freshman. MICHAEL MELISSEN (PERKIOMEN VALLEY) » The sophomore helped the Arcadia men’s swim team finish sixth out of 11 schools from all three divisions at the ECAC Winter Championships Dec. 1-4 in East Meadow, N.Y. Melissen swam with three relay teams that finished fourth including the 200 medley which posted a school record time of 1:38.24. He also swam with the 400 medley relay which finished sixth with a Division III-best time of 3:35.95. And he picked up points by finishing ninth in the 200 IM
(2:03.01) and 14th in the 200 butterfly (2:02.39). FRANKIE KRAUSS (SPRINGFORD) » The sophomore is competing in tournaments for the York wrestling team. He kicked off the season by finishing fourth at 174 pounds at the Monarch Invitational Nov. 5 in WilkesBarre. Krauss is 6-3 and all six of his victories have been impressive – one by major decision, two by technical falls and three by falls. As a freshman, he posted a 23-15 record with four pins and seven major decisions. NICHOLAS VIVIAN (BOYERTOWN) » The versatile junior captured the 200 IM (2:17.26) but his Cabrini men’s swim team dropped a 95-90 dual meet decision to Penn State-Altoona on Dec. 2. He also finished fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:37.47). Vivian finished second in the 1000 freestyle (11:53.37) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.28) in a 93-89 loss to Marywood on Nov. 13. And, he swam a leg on the winning 800 free relay (7:51.42) in a 142-86 loss to Albright on Nov. 12.
