POTTSTOWN >> Police have arrested a robbery suspect after asking for the public’s help in identifying him from surveillance footage.

Darryl Lee Sutton, 21, of East High Street, has been charged after he allegedly robbed two women and was identified by community members.

Police said in an affidavit of probable cause that on Feb. 1 at around 2:48 a.m., a victim had been at the intersection of High and Franklin streets when a white male in his twenties approached her and grabbed her purse. The victim screamed to an officer across the street in his vehicle and he observed the suspect run west along High Street and cut between houses toward Apple Alley. Police headed down North Franklin Street and turned into the alley but the suspect was gone, police said.

Police described the suspect as being between 5 feet 8 inches tall and 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. The victim described the suspect as a white male in his twenties with dark eyebrows. She stated that he was about 5 feet 9 inches tall.

At 2:56 a.m., another victim had withdrawn cash from an ATM and placed it in two pockets. As the victim approached the 400 block of High Street, the suspect came up to her, grabbed her arm and ordered her to give him the money she took out. He kept one hand in his pocket, the victim said. She then handed over a portion of the money and the suspect ran between houses toward Apple Alley, according to court documents.

Police reviewed video surveillance from the area and observed a male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with the number 22 on the back. Police then

When Sutton emerged, a foot pursuit ensued and he was captured by Pottstown detectives less than a block away, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Upon arrest, Sutton was found with a homemade knife that had a matching sheath made from electrical tape and cardboard, police said.

A search warrant was executed on Sutton’s apartment, at which time police found a gray hooded sweatshirt with the number 22 on the back, two pairs of black boots and a purple ladies purse belonging to one of the victims.

Sutton admitted to both robberies while being interviewed by police. He told police that he did not get any money from the first robbery and so he committed the second one, police said.

Sutton is being charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault and loitering or prowling at night. He was arraigned on Feb. 3 before District Judge Andrea Hudak Duffy and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing again before Duffy on Feb. 17. He was unable to post the set $100,000 cash bail and is being held at Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
