Bomb threat empties Pottstown High School.
After a 90-minute search of the building, no bomb was found
The first bomb scare to empty Pottstown High School in many years occurred Wednesday afternoon, halting classes and sending students home without being allowed back for several hours.
The threat was made at 1:39 p.m. and the school was evacuated, according to Pottstown Police.
John Armato, the district’s director of community relations, said it only took two minutes to get all students and staff out of the school building.
Pottstown Police secured the scene and called the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad.
Additionally, bomb sniffing dogs were brought in from state police, Limerick, Horsham, Plymouth Meeting and Montgomery townships to search the building for a possible explosive.
They entered the building at about 3:30 p.m.
It took roughly over 90 minutes for the school to be searched and declared safe, according to police.
School officials, who had issued an electronic alert to parents about the event shortly after it happened, also informed them when students were allowed back into the building — between 6 and 7 p.m. Wednesday — to retrieve any necessary items.
Armato, who has been with the district for more than 30 years, said it has been many years since such an incident occurred at the school.
Police are continuing to investigate.
