Pottsgrove grad starting for Gwynedd Mercy softball

The freshman is hitting .386 (17-for-44) with four doubles, a triple and six RBIs in 14 starts for the Gwynedd Mercy softball team. She’s also 1-1 as a pitcher. Freshman Lauren Waller (Boyertown) is batting .362 (17for-47) with three doubles, a triple, a home run and 11 RBIs in 14 starts. Sophomore right-hander Alyssa Morales (Perkiomen Valley) is 3-3 in six starts on the mound for the Griffins, who are 6-8 overall and 2-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference after winning two games from Summit on March 25.

East Stroudsbur­g freshman Rachel Eidson competed in the 3,000 meter steeplecha­se for the first time in her college career and came away a winner.

Eidson (Daniel Boone) took the Division II-III steeplecha­se at Lafayette’s 7-Way Invitation­al on March 25 in Easton. Her time of 12:20.49 would have won the Division I race.

“Rachel has been a really nice surprise,” cross country and distance coach Joe Koch said. “She had a good cross country season and in the last three or four indoor meets, she really started to develop and drop her times further.”

The coach was impressed with Eidson’s performanc­e at Lafayette.

“She had an outstandin­g debut and it’s quite an accomplish­ment to win your first race,” Koch said. “Rachel has an unbelievab­le future in the steeplecha­se.”

Eidson opened the outdoor season by finishing 46th in the 1,500 meter run at Charlotte’s 49ers Classic on March 18 in Charlotte, N.C. with a time of 5:02.80. That was also her first collegiate 1,500 after competing East Stroudsbur­g’s Rachel Eidson (Daniel Boone) mainly in the 800, 100 and mile indoors this past winter.

The freshman was named Centennial Conference Player of the Week (March 20) for his play with the 2-5 Muhlenberg men’s lacrosse team. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound attack had three goals and three assists to lead the Mules to a 20-4 victory over Elmira on March 19. He’s the first player to accomplish that scoring feat since the program was reinstated in 2003. Colt has four goals and a team-high seven assists for 11 points and also has eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.

The junior scored a career-high five goals on just seven shots and added an assist to lead the Lehigh women’s lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory over American on March 25. She leads the team with 22 goals and has three assists for 25 points. She also has six ground balls, nine draw controls and four caused turnovers for the Mountain Hawks who had their five-game win streak snapped with a 16-9 loss to Navy in a Patriot League test on March 29 to fall to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The junior was named ECAC Athlete of the Week in women’s track (March 29) after a record-breaking performanc­e for West Chester in the Golden Ram Invitation­al on March 25 in West Chester. McLaughlin set a school mark in the 400 meter hurdles, winning with a time of 1:01.88. It was also a provisiona­l qualifier for the Division II NCAA Championsh­ips. She also finished first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.31. The Golden Ram women had 11 first place finishes in the 20-school meet.

The freshman kicked off her outdoor season with the St. Joseph’s women’s track team by finishing third out of 47 competitor­s in the 100 meter dash at the 22nd Monmouth Season Opener on March 25 in West Long Branch, N.J. Her time was 12.54. Duffy also competed in the 400 meter hurdles and finished 13th out of 26 in 1:06.90. She ran the 200, 300 and 400 sprints during the winter, but it was her first hurdle efforts as a collegian.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound junior attack had back-to-back big games to better the 100-point career mark and move into sixth place all-time in points for the King’s men’s lacrosse team. Johnson had four goals and two assists to lead the 3-5 Monarchs to a 15-6 victory over Bryn Athyn on March 25 and came back with four goals and an assist in a 9-6 triumph over Marywood on March 29. He has 17 goals and eight assists on the season and 78 goals and 32 assists for 110 points for his career.

The junior lefthander tossed a no-hitter for 5.1 innings then a relief pitcher took over in Villanova’s 4-1 non-league victory over Delaware State on March 29. She walked one and struck out five to lift her record to 3-2 with a 4.08 earned run average. In eight games and six starts, Prutzer has worked 24 innings and given up 26 hits and 17 runs, 14 earned, with 11 walks and 13 strikeouts. The Wildcats are 15-9 overall and 2-1 in Big East play after a 6-1 win over Delaware State, also on March 29.

The freshman is starting for the George Mason women’s lacrosse team which is 4-4 after a 17-12 non-league home loss to Oregon on March 27 in Fairfax, Va. The 5-foot-6 midfielder has 11 ground balls, three draw controls and four caused turnovers. Huzzard holds the record for assists (128) and points (361) and is second in goals scored (233) in the Owen J. Roberts record book. She had 78 goals as a junior and 70 goals as a senior. The Moravian junior finished third in the hammer throw at Lafayette 7-Way Invitation­al March 25 in Easton. Her effort – 134 feet, 3 inches – was a personal best by more than three feet. Heft also competed in the shot put but didn’t score. She finished fourth in the weight throw at the Landmark Conference Indoor Championsh­ips with a 46 foot, ½ inch effort.

The 5-foot-7 junior midfielder has scored five goals for the Washington College women’s lacrosse team. She had two goals in a 10-7 victory over Albright on March 14 in Hilton Head, S.C. Shaw also has seven ground balls, seven draw controls and two caused turnovers for the Shorewomen who are 5-3 overall and 0-1 in Centennial Conference play after an 11-10 overtime league loss to Dickinson on March 25 in Carlisle.
