Bears on upswing after 4-0 week

By the slimmest of margins Wednesday, June 21, Justin Wieand prevailed over Brett Goodrich in a pitchers’ duel marking Boyertown’s 1-0 win over the Daniel Boone American Legion baseball team.

Wieand made the Bears’ secondinni­ng tally hold up for the victory with four-hit shutout pitching. He yielded just one walk while striking out five in the Berks County League contest.

Chris Davis drove in Mike Xanthopoul­os for the game’s lone run. Davis and Xanthopoul­os each went 2-for-3 as the main contributo­rs to a seven-hit Boyertown offense that consigned Goodrich (two walks, three strikeouts) to the pitching loss.

Boone’s hits were spread out evenly between Matt Stevens, Sean Bologa, A.J. Carr and Michael Bishop.

BOYERTOWN 6, ROCKLAND (NY) 4 » The Boyertown American Legion baseball team rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning to claim a win over Rockland County (N.Y.) Saturday, June 24 during the Berks Invitation­al Tournament.

Rockland struck first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second before the Bears pulled even with three runs in the sixth.

Tyler Kreitz had a pair of hits including a double, two RBI and a run scored while Nick DiCiacco finished with a pair of RBI in the win as Boyertown racked up eight hits total. Mike Xanthopoul­os finished with a hit, an RBI and a run scored while J.T. Cooley had a pair of hits. Nolan Kline got the start but Jared Waldman picked up the win allowing a run on three hits and two walks in four complete innings of work.

BOYERTOWN 15, SHILLINGTO­N3» The Bears’ offense exploded for 15 hits as they rolled the Red Sox in Berks County League play on Thursday, June 22.

Mike Raineri and Tyler Kreitz each had three hits and scored two runs for Boyertown, which brought the mercy rule into effect with a four-run sixth inning. Jared Waldman, pitching the last three innings in relief of starter Drew Hartman, got the win off his no-hit, no-run, four strikeout effort.

Senior Babe Ruth

Pine Forge’s Senior Babe Ruth baseball team used a six-run sixth inning to roll up a 9-3 victory on the Shillingto­n Red Sox in their tournament game at Ephrata’s War Memorial Field on Friday, June 23.

An error enabled the Indians to plate the first run that broke up the 3-3 tie. Doubles by Daniel Monzo and Jonathan Wack — the latter clearing loaded bases — were the Indians’ big hits in the breakout frame.

John DeMartino, Noah Kurtz and Monzo each had two hits for PF. Wack came away with the pitching victory, scattering all three Shillingto­n runs and seven hits while fanning three over five innings.

The Indians broke open a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the way to a National Division win on Thursday, June 22.

Ryan Jacobs, Danny Monzo and Jose Santana registered doubles while Logan Mabry picked up the mound win. Mabry pitched all seven innings where he limited Boyertown to three runs on nine hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts.

Christian Grillo pitched a completega­me two-hitter leading Norchester past Boyertown in Tri-County League play on Thursday, June 22.

Grillo also finished up 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored while Eric Scull was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Ryan Pryor and Vaughn Francesco each scored twice.

Prep baseball

The Bear-Paws utilized 16 hits to roll over Spring City on Tuesday, June 20 and improve to 8-1 on the year.

Ethan Ferraro (3-for-4), Luke Moser (2-for-4), Colin Eisenhard (2-for-3, double), Brandon Shane (2-for-3) and Eddie Higgins (2-for-4) all had multiple hits in the game. Eisenhard pitched four strong innings and Nathan Fox pitched the final two to close out the shutout for Boyertown.
