BOYERTOWN » Just three months after winning election to a second term in office, Boyertown School board member Robert Caso has tendered his resignation.

Contacted Feb. 16, Caso said things had changed for him since the election and he now has “conflicting priorities.”

Caso said the accomplishment of which he is the most proud in his first term was convincing the board to change auditing

firms and go with a larger firm “with a deeper bench.”

“Not that there was anything wrong with the other firm,” but Babracane Thornton & Co. “has more resources and it’s good to get a new set of eyes on the figures on a regular basis,” Caso said.

Among the four board members who most frequently vote in a fiscally conservative fashion, Caso’s departure may provide an opportunity for the five other members to increase their majority.

Caso’s resignation was officially submitted Feb. 14, one day after the most recent school board meeting.

And although the board has not formally accepted his letter of resignation, the district has already advertised to replace him.

Because Boyertown’s board is divided into regions, Caso’s replacement must reside in Region I, which includes the boroughs of Bally and Bechtelsville, as well as the townships of Colebrookdale, Earl, or Washington.

Because Caso was just reelected in November, his replacement will serve until the next municipal election, which is in November of 2019, when the seat will be on the ballot for the remaining two years of Caso’s term.

According to the announcement posted on the district’s web page, applicants for the appointment must meet the following qualifications:

• Be of good moral character, • Be at least 18 years of age,

• Have been a resident of the district for at least one year prior to the date of the appointment,

• And not be a holder of any office or position as specified in Section 322 of the School Code; nor shall the individual be a member of the municipal government,

• Shall not have been removed from any office of trust under federal, state or local laws for any malfeasance,

• Shall not be engaged in a business transaction with the school district, be employed by the school district, or receive pay for services from the school district,

• Shall file a statement of financial interests with the board secretary or designee,

Applications for the seat are available from the Human Resources Department at the Boyertown Area Education Center, 911 Montgomery Avenue; by telephoning 610-369-7606, or by following the link at https://www. boyertownasd.org.

Completed applications must be returned to Stephen Katch, the district’s chief human resources officer, by noon on March 2.

Interim Schools Superintendent David Krem said it his understanding that by law, the board has 30 days to select a replacement, otherwise one can be appointed by the court.

No information on how the applicants will be evaluated, or whether they will be interviewed publicly, has yet been released as the board must meet again to decide those questions, Krem said.
