PHILADELPHIA » The Aldi grocery store chain continues its expansion — including in the tri-county region. The supermarket chain will soon be opening stores in Pottstown and Malvern — part of a $3.4 billion investment by Aldi to build new stores across the country.

The new Pottstown store, in the Pottstown Center Shopping Center, 223 Shoemaker Road, is scheduled to open at the end of June, according to the company. The new Malvern store will be located at 5 Matthews Road, and is scheduled to open in the fall, according to the company.

“When it comes to choosing store locations, we look at many factors. We want the best sites that are closest to our shoppers and can support a high daily traffic volume,” said Bob Grammer, Aldi Center Valley Division vice president. “Bottom line, we want to be conveniently located for our shoppers.”

The new Pottstown Aldi will occupy a space that has been empty since Weis Markets closed its Pottstown supermarket in November 2013. When it opens, the new Pottstown Aldi location will be the third in the Pottstown area.

“A typical Aldi store has 12,000 square feet of retail space,” Grammer added. “The Aldi store layout is simple, with only four or five aisles, making it much easier to navigate than a big box store.”

The Pottstown and Malvern stores are among 750 new stores the company plans to open by the end of 2022. The supermarket chain currently operates 1,750 stores.

To prepare for the openings, Aldi is looking for staff for the new stores, as well as existing stores in Blue Bell, Coatesville, Exton, Limerick, Norristown and Lower Pottsgrove.

The first event will be held Friday, June 1 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Aldi at 297 Armand Hammer Boulevard in Lower Pottsgrove — to fill positions in Blue Bell, Limerick, Norristown, Lower Pottsgrove and the new Pottstown store.

The second event will be held Thursday, June 7 from 2 to p.m. at the Aldi at 154 Airport Road, Coatesville — to fill positions in Coastesville, Exton and the new Malvern store.

According to Grammer, the company is looking for employees to serve a variety of roles including shift managers and full-time store associates.

Applicants must be 18 years or older to apply, according to information provided by Aldi. A high school diploma or GED is preferred. Applicants must be available to work any time between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., Monday through Sunday.

According to the company’s website, applicants are asked to attend the hiring event. They can also submit their resume/application prior to attending by visiting the Aldi careers website at https://careers.aldi.us .

“Job seekers who attend the hiring event will be asked to fill out an application and may be asked about availability and other job requirements,” Grammer said.

Aldi’s ongoing expansion is expected to make the company the third largest grocery store by count in the U.S. — serving an estimated 100 million customers per month, according to company information. The expansion is expected to add 25,000 new jobs in stores, warehouses and offices.
