Two-vehicle crash closes State Street
Neighbors say intersection is scene of multiple crashes
POTTSTOWN » An Uber driver who made a wrong turn was the likely cause of a two-vehicle crash Tuesday evening, June 26, that sent one driver to the hospital, police said.
The accident happened just after 6 p.m. and traffic was diverted off State Street for about an hour.
According to police on the scene, an Uber driver taking a Best Buy employee home from work in a Jeep headed south on State Street, tried to make a left turn onto Eighth Street and was struck broadside by a Mazda MPV minivan headed north on State Street.
Police did not identify either of the drivers, or the Uber passenger, but did say the driver of the Mazda was taken to Pottstown Hospital by Goodwill Ambulance.
Things got more interesting when a man who said he had come to pick up the Uber driver disregarded the instructions of the fire police blocking traffic and drove onto the scene and began shouting.
“Where am I living? Am I not allowed to shout? There is a woman in distress here,” he shouted as police informed him he was disturbing the peace.
Fire Police Captain Jim Smale ran up to police and said “I want this man arrested” as the man got back into his car.
Neighbors of the crash said they are used to having their peace disturbed by car crashes.
“This is the third one in the last two weeks, and one of them involved a school bus,” said Don Morgan.
“I live over on State and 10th and I have a garage over there with a motion detector,” said Tim Hain. “I clock some motorcycles going through here at 70 miles per hour. I see it every day,” he said.
The speed limit on State Street was recently lowered from 35 to 25 miles per hour.
“What we need is a traffic light at this intersection,” said Brenda Morgan.
Police did not say immediately whether any of the drivers in the crash will be cited.
