Boyertown, Upper Perk suffer non-league losses

The Berks Catholic football team overpowered Boyertown Friday night in a 64-6 non-league victory at Memorial Stadium.

Last year’s PIAA Class 4A semifinalists had their way with the Bears by scoring in a multitude of ways, including three special teams touchdowns in the first half, including a Anthony Myers’ 65-yard punt return and an Abdul MacFoy 90-yard kickoff return.

Berks Catholic (3-1) amassed 400 total yards, 259 on the ground. Lead back Brandon George took the opening play from scrimmage 75 yards for a TD and was largely saved, carrying just twice. Colby Newtown carried four times for 65 yards and two touchdowns.

Boyertown managed to rush for 210 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown run by Jamie Moccia (13 carries for 48 yards) in the second quarter that was the Bears’ lone score.

Berks Catholic shut down any passing game for Boyertown as quarterback Ayden Mathias was just 2-for-6 with 27 yards and two interceptions.

Boyertown will open up Pioneer Athletic Conference play with a Liberty Division matchup at Methacton Friday night.

FLEETWOOD 24, UPPER PERKIOMEN 21 » The Tigers rallied past the Indians with a 10-point fourth quarter, quarterback Kevin Bartosh’s 9-yard touchdown run in the closing minutes serving as the difference-maker in this non-conference matchup.

Upper Perk led 21-14 at the end of the third quarter, but a 19-yard field goal from Wes Seaman and Bartosh’s TD run proved all the difference.

Bartosh passed for 85 yards and a touchdown on 6-for-14 passing for the game. He connected with Max Lafranchise on a nineyard touchdown pass to give Fleetwood an early 14-13 lead.

Upper Perk quarterback Tyler Weber was picked off three times, including a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown. For the game, Weber passed for 207 yards including a 93-yard connection to running back Tyrese Reid to open the scoring.

Reid pulled in 102 receiving yards on three catches to go along with 41 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns. Luke Whary rushed it 13 times for 59 yards.

Upper Perkiomen opens up PAC play next Saturday with a Frontier Division matchup against Pope John Paul II.
