Historic Crystal Cave re-opens for 148th season

Historic Crystal Cave, in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, has re-opened for its 148th season. Guided tours, featuring limestone formations, will be offered daily until Nov. 30.

Recent visitors may have noticed an improved appearance inside of Crystal Cave. For several years now, Crystal Cave has collaborated with members of the Greater Allentown Grotto in a restoration and conservation effort to protect this natural resource. Over time, lint, dirt and algae builds up on the walls and formations and inhibits their natural luster. Another source of discoloration came from kerosene poured on the walls and lite prior to electricity.

These distractions have been continually removed by power washing the entire cave. Hoses, ladders, and other equipment are used during the winter when Crystal Cave is closed for the season. The before and after photos impressively show the results from hours of power washing.

Minimizing the effects of human activities in the cave has become a primary goal to maintain and protect this fragile natural wonder for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations to come.

The cave is cleaner, brighter, more colorful and prettier than it has been in decades.

While cleaning the cave, one volunteer found a rare and spectacular, almost intact circular speleothem composed of helictites, called a Lion’s Tail. This was hung for visitors to admire.

Historic Crystal Cave is located on 150 scenic acres in northern Berks County. A wide variety of entertainment for the entire family is offered in season. In addition to the cavern tour and movie presentation about the formation of caves, there is panning for gemstones, miniature golf, souvenir and gift shops, the Crystal Cave Cafe, an ice cream parlor, a free museum, nature trail and picnic facilities.
