Torchia tapped as new superintendent
The Boyertown Area School Board did not have to look very far to find a new superintendent to lead the district.
On Tuesday night, the board unanimously voted to appoint Assistant Superintendent Marybeth Torchia to the top post.
Her term as superintendent begins July 1.
The details of her contract have not been released, and the board postponed the start of her contract until July 1 upon the advice of the district solicitor, who recommended it coincide with other administrative contracts, according to a spokesperson for the district.
Torchia replaces former superintendent Dana Bedden, who left last summer to take a post as superintendent of the Centennial School District in Bucks County.
Upon Bedden’s departure, Torchia was named the district’s acting superintendent.
Torchia began her career as a special education teacher in the Reading Area School District.
In 2000, she became the assistant to the superintendent in
Antietam School District. She then moved to Daniel Boone School District, serving as an elementary principal and then as assistant to the superintendent.
In 2015, after a brief time serving as Daniel Boone’s superintendent, Torchia joined the Boyertown Area School District as the director of secondary special education.
She stepped into the role of assistant superintendent for Boyertown in 2017.
In a statement issued by the district, School Board President Brian Hemingway said the board is “pleased” to announce its choice.
Torchia “stepped into the role at an extremely challenging time in public education and continues to navigate the district through a global, history-making pandemic with a steadfast focus on the academic, physical, social, and emotional health and well-being of our entire learning community,” Hemingway said.
“The Boyertown Area School Board is sincerely appreciative of Mrs. Torchia’s leadership as acting superintendent throughout the past five months, and we look forward to a positive, collaborative future moving ahead,” said Hemingway.
