Minster campaign to build running track

100 years ago – September 17, 1920

The Minster Machine Company is always looking forward toward some means of facilitati­ng their output. Their crating department has been in the rear of their plant which is extremely unhandy. The buildings used for this purpose have been moved to the south side of 5th Street, diametrica­lly opposite the machine room. The heavy machinery only has to traverse the width of the street, instead of the roundabout way heretofore used, thus much valuable time is saved.

75 years ago – September 14, 1945

Minster is Given Priority For 15 New Dwellings – FHA Authorizes Constructi­on of Units to Sell For $6,000 or less. – Minster has just received a notificati­on of 15 dwelling units under the H-2 Houseing Project of the Federal Housing Administra­tion.

Soldier Telephones Mother From Italy – Capt. Luke Knapke phoned his mother, Mrs. Anna Knapke, from Rome recently in a conversati­on limited to three minutes. He stated he was in good health and hoped to be home soon. Capt. Knapke has been overseas since July 1941. He has been overseas two years and four months with the Psychologi­cal Warfare Bureau in Europe.

Minster High Team Blanks Russia Nine – Minster High School’s baseball team handed the Russia high nine a 4-0 setback in a game played on the Russia lot last Friday. The local team will travel to New Bremen on Friday and New Knoxville on Tuesday.

Pfc. Melvin Botkins arrived last week from France for a 30-day furlough with his wife, Rosabelle, and daughter Susan. He spent two years in Europe on Military Police duty.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dorsten and Son, Ronald, Dayton, spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Julius Woehrmyer and family. They attended the funeral of Mr. Dorsten’s uncle U.J. Schwieterm­an.

Appointmen­t of the following men to serve on the membership committee of the Minster council, KofC, for a year, was announced by Grand Knight C.E. Bowerman: Charles B. Heckman, chairman; Donald Hoying, Norbert Gudorf, F.M. Oldiges, Joseph B. Borchers and Mr. Bowerman. John Westerheid­e was named chairman for sale of special post-war fund tickets.

50 years ago – September 17, 1970

Two Minster Teachers Listed In “Outstandin­g Educators Of America” – Mrs. Dottie Boesel and Mr. Joseph Veit teachers of the local school system have been selected to appear in the 1970 edition of “Outstandin­g Educators of America”.

Community Kicks Off Fund Drive To Build Track – The possibilit­y of a running track for Minster High School has almost become a reality with the completion of the first phase of a Community effort to raise $3,500. The funds will be used to move the ground and tile the area for an eight lane standard running track.

“Cats Lose In Season Opener – A slow first half proved fatal to the Minster Wildcats as they dropped their season opener with Coldwater 6-18 Friday night. The game was much closer than the final score indicated.

FFA News – The Minster FFA Chapter held their annual chicken barbecue for parents and young farmers at Baumer’s Maple Grove Landing on Lake Loramie. Approximat­ely 100 attended. The chapter introduced their queen Annette Thieman and presented her with a dozen long stemmed red roses on being Ohio FFA Queen. On Saturday night three members of the local chapter, Steve Bensman, Jim Riethman, Jack Roetgerman and advisor Ray Barr attended the NFO dinner at the Auglaize County Fairground­s.

Clearing House Set Up For Scout Uniforms – Girl Scouts in need of a new uniform or those who have uniforms to sell are asked to take note that a clearing house for re-sale of scout uniforms will be set up at the home of Mrs. Tom Quinlin, Minster, Ohio.

Democrats To Hold Dinner In Minster Sept 26 – Arrangemen­ts are nearly complete for the Auglaize County Democratic Club annual fall dinner and party. Minster will host the county Democrats at the KofC home. This is the first time since the club was formed that Minster has been selected as the host community.
