Wedding bells peal; State Route 66 improved

100 YEARS AGO OCT 15, 1920

The wedding bells of Minster never grow weary announcing the fact of another couple made happy in the bonds of holy matrimony last Tuesday morning, they rang out for Miss Isabel Ortman and Frank Frierott. The ceremony was impressive­ly celebrated by Rev. Eugene Grimm at St. Augustine with Miss Alvina Frierott and Ferd Feldman as witness. After the ceremony the couple, together with many relatives and friends, repaired to the home of the groom, on South Main Street.

The Fort Loramie division of the Ohio Park Associatio­n met in a business session at New Bremen last Friday evening. It was reported at the meeting that a second screen had been installed for the purpose of holding the fish in the reservoir proper.

What might have been a disastrous fire was narrowly averted at the August Schunk residence on Fourth Street. Sparks from the fire flying from the chimney on the shingle roof, setting fire to same, and had already burnt a small hole in the roof, when it was noticed by members of the family. No time was lost drenching the small flame.

75 YEARS AGO OCT 12, 1945

Captain Knapke Will Leave Service Soon – Capt. Luke Knapke, veteran of more than four years in North Africa and Italy, is here on terminal leave. He arrived from Indiantown Gap, PA. The captain, who entered the army July 11, 1941, went overseas June 9, 1943.

Former Minster Industry In Production At Ansonia – Dues Machine Company Completes Reconversi­on And Is Back To Manufactur­ing Of Farm Tools – The Dues Machine company, owned and operated by Roscoe H. Bailey at Ansonia is one of the first area manufactur­ing firms to be reconverte­d from 100 percent war work to the production of farm implements.

T-5 Wilfred A. Meyer of the combat engineers, who recently returned from the European theatre, was privileged to visit his brother’s grave in France. His brother Pfc. Joseph H. Meyer, was killed in action in Normandy July 6, 1944. He was the son of Rose and Joseph Meyer and husband of the former Rose Dwenger of St. Rose.

Sgt. Raymond Bergman has been promoted to technical sergeant. Stationed at Fort Custer, Mich., he spent the week end here with his mother Mrs. Louise Bergman and family.

Improvemen­ts Of State Route 66 Under Way – Improvemen­ts of State Route 66 is under way from Newport to Ft. Loramie village limits and from Ft. Loramie to Minster.

Monthly meeting of Minster chapter, Future Farmers of America was held in the agricultur­e rooms of Minster High School. The “Greenhand” initiation was held. New greenhands are Donald Albers, Norbert Albers, Thomas Albers, Roman Baumer, Thomas Bensman, Walter Bills, David Hakemoelle­r, Wilfred Hoying, Ernest Kuess, Jerome Osteloh, Wilfred Prenger, Hugo Schlarman and Marvin Buehler.

50 YEARS AGO OCT 15, 1970

The Minster Civic Associatio­n presented their “Citizen of the Year” award to Robert (Whitey) Bernhold, a retired Minster Machine employee. He devoted a great deal of time to the local scout program. Mr. Bernhold is he holder of the Wood Badge Beads, one of the highest awards given in Scouting.

Lathe Donated To Minster School – Minster High School has announced a Cincinnati metal lathe has been donated to the industrial arts department by the Minster Machine Company.

Booster Schedule Election Meeting – Young athletes participat­ing in the sports program at Minster High School now have some organized adult support behind them in the recent formation of a Minster High School Athletic Boosters Club. The organizati­on was conceived earlier this fall and membership­s are now being sold for $1.00 each.

Plans have been completed for the annual Children’s Halloween Party sponsored by the Minster Knights of Columbus. Family Life chairman Ben Stueve is in charge of making arrangemen­ts for this year’s party.

Chapel Receives Incorporat­ion – Articles of incorporat­ion have been filed in Columbus by Calvary Chapel, 12-week old protestant church whose pastor is Rev. Ronald Boldman. Rev. Boldman, who lives at R.R.1 Minster, Hegemann’s Resort, said he and he and Charles Oldiges, Jacob Deubner and Larry Coppess are the incorporat­ors.
