Military Exhibit show

-

The staff of the Museum of the Soldier is pleased to provide an interesting display of military related firearms for this 20th Annual Military and Gun Exhibit. This year’s exhibit will display a wide range of British and Commonwealth firearms, accessories and a few uniforms.

A Member of the Board of Directors of the Museum of the Soldier will bring a large British Collection for exhibit on Sunday. This is his first exhibit at the Mercer County Historical Museum.

The exhibit will feature a rare, WW I propeller from a SE-5E fighter aircraft, one of the most successful of the British combat aircraft of the era. This nearly 8-foot-long propeller, owned by the Mercer County Historical Society, has been in storage for several years. For more information about this propeller, see this rare World War I propeller on display.

The Museum of the Soldier, Inc. was founded in 1997 by a group of military historians to preserve military history. The donation of the former Coca-Cola bottling plant building at 510 E. Arch Street in Portland, IN., provided the Museum a permanent home. Since that time, the Museum has collected thousands of artifacts and has done extensive repairs to the building.

The all-volunteer staff has the Museum open the 1st and 3rd full weekends of the month, April through November. The Museum will celebrate the US Marine Corps Birthday with a program on Sunday, November 8 at 2 P.M., at the Museum of the Soldier, 510 East Arch Street, Portland, Indiana. Call 260-766-4235 for more information.

The Mission of the Mercer County Historical Society is To Preserve Mercer County’s History and To Educate the public about that history. In keeping with this Mission, the Society is preserving Military History, not only in this special 20th Annual Military Exhibit, but also the Military Exhibit on permanent display at this County Museum.
