Redskins football rolls over Eagles

- By SETH KINKER

The #2 seeded Fort Loramie Redskins (6-1) routed the #19 Troy Christian Eagles (4-4) on Oct. 16 in the second round of the OHSAA playoffs, a D. VII Region 28 matchup, 49-6.

Wasting no time, the Redskins forced a turnover after kicking off to the Eagles, an interception by Redskin senior Nick Barhorst on an Eagles roll out and pass attempt.

That gave the Redskins the ball at their own 37-yard line and two pass plays later, both to Logan Eilerman, the Redskins scored as senior quarterback Collin Moore found Eilerman up the seam for a 40-yard strike to make it 7-0 with 9:11 in the first quarter.

A three and out by the Redskin defense got them the ball back at their own 37-yard line and on the first play after the Eagles punt, Moore took it to the house on a designed run up the middle to make it 14-0 with 7:18.

After a pint by the Eagles, a pick thrown by the Redskins and another Eagles punt, the Redskins got the ball back near midfield with a few minutes left in the first.

A Moore run up the middle got them down to the Eagles 30-yard line and Redskin senior Sam Barhorst took a handoff to the right side and scampered in while tight roping the sideline for the score to put them up 21-0 with 2:57 to go in the first.

Rolling over a possession at the end of the firs to the second quarter, Barhorst scored his second touchdown of the night with a 15-yard run up the middle as he dived over the goal line with 11:50 left in the first half and put the Redskins up 28-0.

The Eagles took the following kickoff back to the Redskin 18-yard line but the defense forced a three and out and the Eagles missed the field goal from the Redskin 13-yard line.

The Redskins made them pay by driving 80-yards, a big chunk of it coming on a deep pass to Barhorst on a third down that got them down to the Eagles 23yard line.

Barhorst would punch it in with 7:44 left in the first half from four yards out to put the Redskins up 35-0.

After another three and out for the Eagles, the Redskins took over with 5:59 left and scored again with 3:47 left. Barhorst scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a second and goal from the 1-yard line, taking it wide left for an easy walk in to put the Reskins up 42-0.

“I love that kid,” said Redskins head coach Spencer Wells. “He gives awesome effort every single game. He’s one of our hardest workers in the offseason, he’s a two-way guy, he’s had to step up with injuries. We didn’t plan on running him a whole lot this year, he was going to be a receiving threat but he’s taken that on, taken the coaching points from coach Turner. He’s a leader on both side of the ball and it was exciting to see him make some plays.”

Before the half, the Eagles would get on the board, driving down to the Redskins 5-yard line in 10 plays, that included a nice fourth down conversion, and resulted in a roll out toss for the touchdown with 23 seconds left in the half.

Brett Bruns of the Redskins would block the point after touchdown to make it 42-6 as the

Redskins ran out the clock to get it to halftime. A running clock in the second half meant limited possessions for both sides.

The Redskins would score the only points of the second half after receiving the second half kickoff. They drove 66-yards in three plays with junior running back Jacob Sherman taking it 46-yards to the house with 10:10 left to make it 49-6.

The reserves saw playing time after that for the Redskins as they kept the ball on the ground. “We got better,” said Wells after the game. “That’s going to be a theme every week moving forward, get better and earn another week. I thought we did a lot of good things tonight, I’m sure there’s things to correct on film but we played fast and had a good start. I thought we played good complimentary football throughout the game; it was a fun night.”
