Postcards are glimpse into past

What post cards do you have at your home? Are they saved in a shoebox, or in a scrapbook? Are you aware that these old post card photograph­s hold clues to the history of our communitie­s? If you do not want your old post cards, please do not throw those old post cards in the trash. If you have no use for them at all, please consider donating those old post cards to the Mercer County Historical Society for the purpose of preserving our local history.

November 8, 2020, 1:00 – 4:00, you are invited to visit the Post Card and Post Mark Exhibit at the Mercer County Historical Museum, 130 East Market, Celina. Dale Poeppelman and other Local Post Card Collectors will show their Post Card Collection­s of old photograph­s of local communitie­s at the Mercer County Historical Museum on Sunday afternoon. David Gray will show his collection of Post Marks and Autographs of Famous Citizens. You will recognize famous people from your lifetime.

People study old post card photograph­s, and try to identify the buildings, or scenes or citizens on the front of the old post cards.

The Boetia U.S. Post Office Post Mark is the Rarest Postcard or envelope in Mercer County, Ohio. I have a list of all of the Post Offices in Mercer County,

Ohio. I cannot find a Post Card or an envelope with a Post Mark from the U.S. Post Office at Boetia, which was establishe­d June 21, 1850 and discontinu­ed Oct. 13, 1865, and was located near Route 127 and Center Township. Can anyone find an envelope or post card with the U.S. Boetia Post Office post mark?

People interested in the history of Grand Lake will see post cards of the lake as well as the landings around the lake. Visitors may view historic Post Card Photograph­s of Grand Lake, and scenes of Off Shore Oil Wells on Grand Lake, and vistas of the local villages in the new book, “Oil & Gas Boom, Mercer County and Midwest Ohio,” which will be available for Christmas Presents. We have had so many local phone calls about this book, that we will retain the presales cost of $45.00 through December. The regular price will be advertised in January, 2021.

The Mission of the Mercer County Historical Society is “To Preserve Mercer County’s History and To Educate the public about that history.” In keeping with this Mission, the Society is preserving local history by preserving historic post cards with photograph­s from our past. At this November 8 exhibit of Post Cards and famous autographs, please follow Social Distance Rules and wear your face mask. We will look forward to seeing you on Sunday afternoon, November 8.
