Cards top Redskins in regional semifinal

- By SETH KINKER

The #3 seeded New Bremen Cardinal football team (6-2) took the short trip to Fort Loramie on Oct. 30 and upset the #2 Fort Loramie Redskins (7-2) in a low scoring affair on a cold night, 16-8.

The Redskins came into the game averaging 49 points per game and giving up just ten but the Cards were able to limit the Redskins big play potential while scoring on a broken play and a big play of their own.

Neither side could get on the board in the first quarter but the Cards showed they could move the ball while the Redskin offense struggled.

The Card outgained the Redskins 335-213 including a 199-8 advantage on the ground.

“I just thought they played great defense,” said Redskins head coach Spencer Wells. “We couldn’t find any consistency all night. It was tough, they made it tough because they executed well on the defensive side.”

The Cards got the ball in good field position, a consistent theme on the evening, at their own 40-yard line. They would fail to convert a fourth and long with Cards quarterback Mitchell Hays looking for wide receiver Dan Homan but they had moved it down to the Redskins 33-yard line.

Although the Redskins would pick up a first down, they would fail to convert the next set of downs and had to punt back to the Cards.

Starting the drive at their own 23-yard line, the Cards moved quickly with a crossing route to Homan moving the Cards from their own 28-yard line down to the Redskins 14-yard line.

The drive stalled, however, after a false start and two runs and the Cards would miss the field goal with just under a minute left as neither team scored in the opening quarter.

The first turnover of the game went the way of the Redskins, they got a fourth down stop backed up to their own 22-yard line when Sam Barhorst picked off Hays at the 10-yard line as Hays rolled to his right.

Barhorst le the team with six tackles, a sack and the interception. A three and out, however, and a short punt would give the Cards the ball at the Redskin 29-yard line. A third down pass from the 11yard line lofted for Homan down the sideline missed but Owen

Gabel came out and nailed the field goal with 5:36 left to put the Cards ahead 3-0.

After three straight three and outs, two by the Redskins and one by the Cards, the Cards got the ball with 59 seconds left in the first half at midfield.

Two plays later, Hays would run left, shed a tackle and take it 44-yards to the house to put the Cards up 10-0 with 42 seconds left.

Hays ran for 92 yards on 20 carries while going 7-19 for 136 yards through the air with a pick and a touchdown.

The Redskins got the ball at their own 28yard line and wasted no time in moving down the field.

First Redskin quarterback Collin Moore found Sam Barhorst for a 21-yard gain, then
