Stay healthy this season

- By DAN SCHENKING AFLAC REPRESENTATIVE

Welcome to December. The month that is its own season. The season of joy and giving, family and friends, and for some; a season of stress. While this season is going to be different than most, some of the stress will still be there and in cases of absence of family those stresses can be more than burdensome. How do we stay on top of our game?

To begin to help your mindset, focus on those things you can control. Be patient with yourself and ask questions about your emotions. “Am I overthinking a possible negative outcome?” or “Am I dealing with things as they are or is my perception getting in the way?” Remember we are all carrying some sort of burden so be patient with others as well.

For those of us that feel extra stressors during this season either from the excessive schedules or isolation, here are a few simple tips to help us all from Vida Health:

• Eat mindfully. Check in with yourself and take time to assess your body’s needs. Eat as many regular meals as possible and at the same time you normally would. Slow down, give thanks, and engage all of your senses while eating.

• Stay hydrated. Be sure to drink the recommended eight glasses of water per day. Staying hydrated can help you fight off sickness and consume fewer calories.

• Get restful sleep. Good sleep is necessary to reduce stress and improve your mood.

• Exercise. Get moving in the morning or before the day-of festivities begin.

It’s important to take a step back from holiday stressors and remember what this time of year is all about. The gathering, whether in person or virtual, is an opportunity to come together and connect with loved ones.

It has been a pleasure this year writing for the Community Post. I wish all of you the best throughout this season and in the new year to come. Peace.
