Eugene Leroy Hirschfeld, age 88, of Celina, Ohio, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

He was born on June 14, 1932 near New Bremen, Ohio to the late Leroy and Goldie (Nevergall) Hirschfeld. On May 12, 1956, he married Patricia (Deitsch) Hirschfeld who proceeded him in death in 2003.

Eugene is survived by five children: Mary Jo (Joe) Muhlenkamp of Lewis Center, Ohio; Rod (Carla) Hirschfeld of Celina; Alice (Michael) Siddall of Columbus; Pamela (Bret) Gilmore of Hilliard Ohio; and Tim (Missy) Hirschfeld of Dublin. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Ella Ayers of Leesburg, Florida and June Hegemier of Oak Harbor, Ohio. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Bryan Richards, John Siddall, Greg Hirschfeld, Emma (Siddall) Schlosser, Megan Hirschfeld, Adam Siddall, Maggie Hirschfeld, Jack Hirschfeld, Brooke Gilmore, and Carly (Muhlenkamp) Mavriplis and three great-grandchildren, Olivia Richards, Miles Richards, and Arianna Adam and two more on the way.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife, his brothers-in-law Carlos E. Ayers and Eugene Hegemier, and his granddaughter, Mindy (Richards) Adam who passed away earlier this year.

Eugene was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean Conflict. Eugene was active in various roles at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hopewell Township. His most current involvement was with the Men in Mission Group. Eugene and his wife, Patricia, traveled to Tanzania and were pivotal in the building of a school that later was dedicated to Patricia. Eugene loved history and enjoyed sharing his passion with friends and family. He was a member of the Mercer County Historical Society as well as the Civil War Round Table group. He founded his own company, Hirschfeld Construction, in 1969. Citizens of Mercer and surrounding counties would be hard-pressed to pass by a home that he or his son, Rod, have not either built themselves or renovated over the years. He was humble and generous, quietly donating his time and charity to those in need without fanfare or acknowledgement. Eugene will be missed by all who knew him, but his impact will live on for generations to come.

Private family funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at the Lehman Dzendzel Funeral Home, with Vicar Adam Poe officiating. Burial will follow in the Buck Cemetery, with Military Honors provided by the Celina American Legion Post #210 and the Celina V. F. W. Post #5713. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hopewell Township 9009 State Route 118, Celina, OH 45822.
