50 Years Ago This Week – 1971

Fifty years ago this week in 1971, St. Marys football alum Mike Youngs was prepared to represent the Roughriders at the 25th annual Ohio North and South All-Star game. Youngs was the leading scorer in the Western Buckeye League as well as the Lima Region in 1970 with 150 points and 22 touchdowns. He was selected as special mention All-Ohio and was planning to continue his education and football career at the University of Cincinnati. Youngs was tabbed as the third St. Marys player in 25 years to play in the summer all-star contest.

Ten years years ago this week in 2011, the Minster ACME teams’ dream of a state title fell short following a 3-2 loss to Vandalia Butler in Celina. The Wildcats scored first in the top of the second inning, only to fall behind 2-1 at the end of the third frame and 3-1 after five innings. They managed a run in their half of the sixth, but it wasn’t enough as they concluded their summer with a 17-8 record. Pitcher Doug Huber suffered the loss on the hill for the Orange and Black, after walking five batsmen and allowing three earned runs on six hits.
