Cardinals fall short against Coldwater

- Managing Editor By COREY MAXWELL

COLDWATER — In a battle of unbeatens, Coldwater edged out New Bremen Friday night, 28-14.

The loss is the Cardinals’ first since Sept. 18, 2020 when New Bremen fell to Coldwater in Week 4, before they rallied off eight straight wins to the program’s first state title.

New Bremen trailed 13-0 at the half, but the Cardinals played with more urgency in the second half.

Coldwater received the kickoff to begin the second half and had the ball at New Bremen’s 43-yard line with a 4th and 2 coming up.

Electing to go for it, Evan Eyink stuffed the Cavaliers ball carrier near the line of scrimmage and forced the turnover.

Taking over at the 43-yard line, New Bremen’s Dave Homan connected with Trevor Bergman for 19 yards. On the next play, Homan ran for seven yards of his own.

Later, on 3rd and 4, Homan hooked up with Branxton Krauss for five yards and the first.

Homan picked up nine yards on his next carry and then Hunter Schaefer ran for four yards.

Two more Homan runs set New Bremen up at Coldwater’s 2-yard line and Homan was able to finish off the drive, running up the middle for the score and getting the Cardinals on the board to make it one-score game. It didn’t last for long.

After Krauss made a tackle for loss to bring up 2nd and 11, Coldwater found paydirt.

Coldwater’s Reece Dellinger connected with Jesse Meyer for a 74-yard touchdown, extending the Cavaliers lead.

New Bremen’s next drive stalled at the Cavaliers 42-yard line after a failed pass play on 4th and 7.

The Cavaliers would strike again on their next drive, with Luke Sudhoff scoring on an 11-yard run to make it a 28-7 game.
